From my experience at Croydon (2012 and 2014, so it might be different now), you were able to leave the building while waiting. We didn't leave, but there's a shopping centre across the street. I think they said they could call us when they were ready, but I don't remember for sure since we decided to stay (both were the dead of winter and it was waaaaay too cold outside).

I know that isn't really UKVI making accommodations for your situation and needs, but if you really wanted to do an in-person application, it might be an option. It also might have changed since then, so don't make plans based solely on my experience.

If you do make an appointment, try for the first slot of the day and arrive a bit early. That's what we did and it was quiet when we got there, but the crowds came shortly after we'd started the process.

Yup, we were able to leave for a bit.  The doors are locked at 3:30 sharp, so we got back just after 3 to be safe.  But we were able to wander for an hour.  Croydon is looking good these days!

Every time I ask myself "why did I do this", I literally remember that my support system/BFF/husband couldn't come to live with me for at least two more years. And the US isn't the greatest.

When I went back earlier this year, I had bad reverse culture shock. I romanticized a lot of my memories of living there lol

But yeah, the visa process officially turned a chunk of my hair white. Found it yesterday as I was attempting to do my makeup.

I can't imagine how frustrating that was for you. But hey! Good result at the end!
2017: Survived a rejected FLR(M) & the wait for Non-Priority Spousal Visa (✿◠‿◠)
2020: ( •̀ᄇ• ́)ﻭ✧ FLR(M) approved
2022: ୧ʕ•̀ᴥ•́ʔ୨ ILR done
2024: (°◡°♡) Citizenship process begun

Yes and yes.  Even managed to get home in time to tuck the three year old in.

Just annoying to pay £590 and not have a real appointment, iykwim.  But it's done!  That's what matters!
