Impossible to find unboned, skin-on chicken breasts!
« on: September 20, 2017, 03:05:22 PM »
The Daughter is catching a cold. I want to make chicken soup from an old recipe I have here. We don't like dark meat chicken. I just walked three miles and hit like four grocery stores and two butchers, no luck. I did find entire chickens for very good prices, but it bothers me to buy one knowing we'd be throwing a third of it away.

So, given that the gent behind the counter in Rodgers Butchers looked at me like I had two heads when I asked him if they were ever in the shop, is it "a thing" that you can't get in Glasgow only, or a UK thing? Bone-in, skin-on chicken breasts?  I found drumsticks. I found chicken thighs. I found chicken wings. And, I found the whole chicken. But no white meat, bone-in, skin-on chicken breasts.

You may also need to look for them to be packed as chicken crowns.

Ok, thanks!  I was just going up and down the rows looking at what was there.

If it's never been a big seller or ask in that Tesco, they tend to not stock it.  Which sucks!

I've bought them in my local Morrison's and my butcher is quite happy to cut up a whole chicken and sell the bone-in breasts to me.

Must be nice - seriously, the butchers I asked looked at me like I had three heads. I asked if there was a way to get it and they said "no."

Did they have chicken? I've found my local butchers carry pretty much beef, pork and lamb. The only chicken they have is skewers.

Yes, they had chicken. Chicken drumsticks, chicken wings, whole chickens. And a big platter of boneless, skinless chicken breasts.... just like everywhere else!  ::) :(

Get thee to Anniesland Morrisons!  It's worth a try, as they've an in-store butcher.
I have to confess it's not something I've ever looked for (we like thighs), but I would suspect the reason they're not readily available is because they're sold by weight, and the canny west of Scotland people don't like paying for a bone they're just going to bin.

I have a hard time finding chicken or turkey parts like necks, hearts and gizzards. I can find livers in the frozen section of Tesco.

Heck, I can't even find beef bones. I did find marrow bones at Waitrose however.

I found an online butcher that has 'em as "chicken crowns", and some nice looking beef. So I'll place an order this weekend and try them out. :) (Free delivery over 50 pounds. I've got a freezer.)

It's really hard to make a proper medicinal chicken soup without the bones, skin, and fat....

Campbells?

If so, they always have tons of discount codes available and you can stack them.
