Tortillas!
« on: September 21, 2017, 12:32:00 AM »
My husband is off this week for my birthday (he missed by a week, but close enough  ;) ), so we finally got around to making our tortilla press!  And then we made tortillas and had chicken enchiladas for dinner.  Yay!

Also, yesterday we travelled to Bristol where I passed my Life in the UK test, so now we're just waiting out the clock 'til we can do my application and join the "no longer subject to immigration control" club.

Wow, all this news and I nearly missed it because I'm not that fussy about tortillas!  ;D

Make sure you get the right book, you need this one, not the study guide which is a waste of time. https://www.tsoshop.co.uk/Life-in-the-UK/Life-in-the-United-Kingdom-A-Guide-for-New-Residents/?TrackID=002353

Read the book. Take all the online practice tests until you are easily passing every time. Re-read any sections you are weak on, then go for it!  ;D

That press is nice! You should sell them!
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

That skull design is awesome .  I to feel a sudden need for a tortilla press even though it had never occurred to me before.

Happy birthday!! Congrats on the test any advice I'm about to start studying just need to buy the book.

I confess I didnt buy a book to study.  I bought the app by TSO for Android and just read through the entire "study" section, one category at a time.  Then I started doing mock exams.  I think I only got one failing mark.  By the time we were driving to Bristol on the morning of my test, my husband and I were able to get 24 out of 24 in about 10 minutes (you need 18 out of 24 to pass, and you can take up to 45 minutes).

In the real test, I only had one or two questions that felt like uncovered information.  I answered all 24, flagging any one I wasn't totally confident about (three of them) along the way to review.  Then I went back and stared at those three for a while before deciding I was confident enough in the other 21 that I knew I'd pass, so I just left my best guess for those three and ended my test.

I was booked for 2pm, arrived at about 1:30 and they let me in the building early.  After checking in, it was about 1:45 when I entered the test room.  I was texting my husband at 2:04 to let him know I had my pass letter in hand.

Thanks!  We decided the top needed something thematic to dress it up.

This one was an opportunity to try out different techniques we've been wanting to try (and finally have a press because I bought masa harina a couple of weeks ago).  But once we have all the kinks worked out, that's a possibility.  For starters, we'd use less pine and more hardwood.  :P

Thanks for the birthday wishes, everybody! I've gotta say, this has been one of the best ones yet.  And my birthday is still 5 days away!

Ok, I know that's not actually true. I've bought them before years ago to make homemade corn chips. But I've not had an actual corn tortilla in a meal.

They make good enchiladas.  Now we're expirementing to find a good recipe to replace the Wahaca's style ones that worked so well for our taquitos.

TAQUITOS!!!

The taquitos at Tastee Freez, with the avocado dip were my favourite food as a nipper.

If I had corn tortillas, I would make some tonight!  Can't see me getting to Lupe Pintos this weekend, so I will  need to do a Mex Grocer order, I think.
