Got my pumpkins!!
« on: October 07, 2017, 11:19:24 AM »
Officially picked up our two pumpkins today at Sainsburys! They have LOADS of them! Some of them are absolutely massive (but husband is a spoiled sport and told me the were too big and to get one of the "carving pumpkins" as they are more reasonable sized). There were a lot in the one I went to and most were in perfect, mostly clean condition (but make sure to check it all over as some had soft mushy spots that blended it).

LET THE PUMPKIN CARVING COMMENCE!

....I also bought more Halloween decorations at poundland.....a jack-o-lantern and a ghost tealight holder with a pack of some electric tealights.........aaannndddd a solar-powered dia de los muertos mariachi head bobbler to go with the Queen and her corgi that we already have. It's been a while since they made a new friend so I thought "why not?". As husband said, he'd rather I spend a quid each on all the stuff than try to buy expensive items! If we had a tree out front, I totally would've got things to hang from it too but I'm not feeling THAT committed this year because there's just so much going on at the moment.

Nope we went to bagshot in Bracknell as it's closers and we had to go into Bracknell to get the doggo some food at Pets at Home....and I needed a Starbucks lol

I'd go to the pumpkin patch but it's not worth the effort of trying to convince husband to do that when we have a DIY project to complete so it's a compromise to just sainsbury-it! Haha

When I was learning to drive (I was 28), my instructor recommended that I learn "mum" driving and park into a space and reverse at THAT Sainsbury's car park. I tried it and I hit a car. I barely touched it but he shouted, "Sh**! Get the hell out of here and go!" I'm guessing that was a "mum" skill ? I lived in Woosehill and that was my closest Sainsbury's and I never again went to that location!

My husband is a professional photographer and he's been booked this month and next to photograph kids in pumpkin patches. It's a really weird request to us. My grandparents were cotton and vegetable pickers from Mexico so I'm more inclined to start picking produce than sitting in it. I'm quite surprised it's a "thing" in England. Husband says that pumpkin has never really been popular so to find a patch is unique.

I honestly didn't know it was a "thing" over here. I thought it was just a US thing but I'll take it as it means maybbee there will be more of them for us to have and visit!

I like when they go for £0.01 and £0.02 and even free on the 01 November.  I stock up and make puree, other pumpkin food and pumpkin beer.
But even at £1.00-£1.50 at Tesco, they're super cheap.
Talking to my sisters in the US, who have been buying pumpkins for their kids for carving, they're paying $1-$2.00/pound at the 'Pick your own at the Pumpkin Patch' - and with the average carving pumpkin weighing 8-10 lbs or more, it's not cheap. Of course, they could also get them cheaper at Walmart, $4.00 or so, but even that is not as cheap as Tesco.
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

I have placed my Tesco grocery shop order for the week, and 2 for £3 "Large" pumpkins are in it!  I also ordered the £1 "carving kit" because I had good luck with that kind of system (poke holes to trace a pattern, then use the tiny plastic-handled 'saw' to carve) in the years before I moved to the UK.  This will be my first pumpkin carving since 2011!  And it might be my husbands' first ever.  :)

I'm excited, as we have this awesome (ugly) glass porch on the front of the house, and the finished jack-o-lanterns will fit perfectly on the low walls for people passing by to see.

Don't forget to roast the seeds for your husband, he'll be pretty impressed.
