Ox Tail - need recipe
« on: November 28, 2017, 07:51:48 PM »
Ok, the butcher was having a Black Friday and I now have about 2 pounds of ox tail (nicely cut into smaller segments).  I have heard great things about how good this is, slow cookered, but don't actually have a recipe that I've used before.

Has anyone got a good one?

I don't do recipes.

I just put my ox tail in the slow cooker (after I brown them) and let cook until tender. I add onions, salt, pepper, beef broth. Then I taste when done and re-spice to my taste.

I don't use the slow cooker now. I use my Instant Pot.

Sounds like even I could manage that!  ;D

I have a lot of old cookbooks, including one of the Make Do and Mend variety from WW2, I think I'll see what's in there. Otherwise, we'll see how it goes! :)  Thanks.

Just keep in mind what you want to use them for.

Sometimes I want them for beef tacos so I add cumin, coriander and turmeric to them.

Or I might want them for a beef and vegetable pie. Then I just shred them and thicken the gravy and add vegetables.

They are so versatile and very flavorful.

I was thinking soups/stew.

I do what nctami72 does. I usually do add celery and carrot as well.
I've cooked them in BBQ sauce as well.
Yummy!

Thanks. I had tried it in another stew recipe and it made a lovely broth, but we had to throw the meat itself out as it was inedible (toooo rich and fatty to eat) sadly!
