Did you guys know that eggnog is good?
« on: December 11, 2017, 03:15:43 PM »
I didn't know that.  But, man!  It's amazing good!

So, like, my whole life I have had countless opportunities to try eggnog, but I'd always turn it down because it looked and was described to me as something I didn't think I'd like.  I don't like milkshakes or creamy things.  I will eat ice cream, but not a lot, and not often.  I much prefer sorbets and ices. But I knew my husband had never had eggnog and was curious about it, so I was going to buy some Borden eggnog for him so he could try it with minimal effort.  And someone recently posted that American foods site where they had the stuff on offer for 50p because it had a short date on it.  But I had trouble checking out and gave up on the whole endeavor, and when I went back later to try again, it was out of stock.

So last week when I was doing the shopping, I decided to get all the ingredients just in case we spontaneously decided we'd make eggnog.  Friday night, my husband was home and relaxing on the sofa poking at his phone and asks, "Do we have double cream?"  I happily said, "Yup."  "Eggs?"  "Yes."  "Milk?"  And then I said, "Do you want to make eggnog?  I bought all the things. We can do this."  So we did.  And it was amazing!

I had no idea!  It's like drinking an egg custard tart, but without the crust.  I love egg custard tart!  Yeah. So I've been thinking about eggnog ever since.  We will be making it again.  In a bigger batch to last the weekend.  Nom.

I like it in small doses.  A little goes a long way for me.  Not that I have the option to have it right now anyways.   ;D

When I took the first sip to taste it, I was pleasantly surprised.  So we poured a glass for each of us, and I fully expected I would drink a bit, and then my husband would finish mine after his was gone.  But I just kept sipping it 'til there wasn't any left.  We were both surprised that I drank a whole cup of it.

Are you still drinking for two?  The animated sack of potatoes isn't interfering with your holiday celebrations, is he?

Yup, still no dairy in my life.

He's starting to bust out of his sack!  Last week he was pawing at the carpet desperate to crawl.  He doesn't have the strength yet (thank heavens!), but he did figure out how to link rolling to get to where he wants to go.  He gets stuck every 10 minutes or so.  Can't help but laugh at him!   ;D

I fear I'm nearing the end of my easy baby days!

Oh no... but maybe he'll start exercising and then he'll sleep longer at night...?  Maybe there's a silver lining to the baby on the loose.  Just in case, do you have some kind of baby container?  Pack 'n Play?  Baby gates?  Something?  You must.  Your daughter isn't very old yet, so you must have all the things you used for her.  You got this, right?

Oh. phew!  You are sane, so I figured you must have a baby jail.  But then I thought maybe you didn't need one when you weren't outnumbered yet.  I relied on the Pack 'n Play for part of my daily routine when I was nannying (not all day!  *assure*).

Not an eggnog person (although my nana used to try to ply me with eggnog and brandy constantly during the holidays when you'd go over to visit hahah) but I can say that I wouldn't turn down an Iced Eggnog Latte if offered to me.

I honestly thought I was not an eggnog person, too.  But mygawd.  I am still remembering how good it was.  Or maybe it was only good because we made it...?  We just followed a recipe, though.  I mean, I don't think we did anything special.  It was just good.

Oh.  There are several different types of booze you can put in it.  Some say bourbon, some say rum, some say whatever you have on hand.  (Some say nothing at all!)  We used dark rum.  I don't know if that makes a difference, but I suspect it does.  I don't think it would have been quite as nice with a different type of liquor in it.

Advocat is nice, but it's nothing like double cream and fresh eggs.

Yes, I do know eggnog is good. Eggnog is fabulous and Homemade eggnog is utterly amazing.
 ;D
I loved Hood Golden Eggnog growing up In Uni, we used to get Hood Eggnog and add godknows what into it, usually as a dare. But we'd persevere and the combination of lots booze and creamy eggnog always ended in a pukefest [smiley=puke.gif] for someone.

I'd say you can make a dairy free version KFDancer as there are a lot of recipes out, but if you're not into that much, it would probably not be worth it.
I've never gotten food on my underpants!

You might like these (wasn't sure if eggs are ok)

Egg & dairy free: https://autoimmunewellness.com/egg-less-nog/

just dairy free: https://www.jaysbakingmecrazy.com/2017/12/02/dairy-free-paleo-eggnog/ (this is the one I'll be trying, but with non-nut milks cuz I'm allergic to those too)

I've never had egg nog, but I feel like I should try it because I love custard made with eggs. :)

If you do try it, I think I recommend homemade to give it the fairest chance.  Everybody I've now gushed to about how great  eggnog is has said the same thing, "Yes, it's good.  Especially homemade."
