« on: January 02, 2018, 10:11:33 AM »
Needing to find a international money order so I can pay for my new passport from the embassy in london, not going in person but by mail, anyone have a clue as to where I can get one?

Try your US bank if you still have one?

I hope they change this silly rule for payment back to the way it was.

Do you have friends or family who could send one to you?

no.  At present we are trying to find a bank in the uk who does this, but if they aren't available ie International Money Orders, then why are they asking for payment that way?  I have been in the UK almost 8 years now and it is the first time I have had this problem come up.

I have no idea why they have done this. It must have changed very recently because you are only the second person to ask here.

I'm busy with my husband's ILR application at the moment or I would call the embassy myself to see what they have to say about it!  ;D

If you find a bank that can help, please come back to let us know!

What about asking in the Post Office, or trying a Western Union location (https://www.westernunion.com/gb/en/send-money-in-person.html)?

It seems like most places only do online transfers these days, but they might be able to tell you if it's still possible to get a physical International Money Order.

western Union only does online as far as I can tell from their website.  As for the Postal service, they do money orders but only for UK, not in US dollars.

This is getting silly now.

Hmm, looks like Western Union in the US still does them:

Is there anyone in the US who might be able to buy one for you and then send it to you?

I've just renewed (in December) my US passport via Edinburgh; I applied by post. They gave me the option to use my UK bank card (via hard copy form). I'm not certain if this helps in any way, but thought I'd mention it.

That does help.  However that isn't an option that I have been able to locate just yet

They've just changed it. You used to be able to pay by card, but now they seem to have stopped this option.

It seems to be a very recent change, like in the last week or so, since someone else applied for a renewal in mid-December and they didn't mention any issues with having to get a banker's draft or money order for payment (http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=92445.msg1210924#msg1210924).

Someone else posted about this exact problem just a few days ago:

I've still got another 3+ years before I need to do it....I can only hope they get things fixed by then.
