Do you feel you don't visit home enough?
« on: January 04, 2018, 11:02:05 PM »
Hey hey! I'm attempting to gather some research on the experiences of other Americans living here with respect to travelling home for holidays, vacations, etc. (especially if you're like me and missed your best friend's wedding because you just couldn't afford it or some similar unfortunate circumstance).

It would just be about a 5 minute phone call some time in the next week. If any of you could spare it I'd be exceptionally grateful, and it might make it easier to help you get back to the US more often.

Can you tell us who/what you are gathering this research for?  I don't mean to sound cynical, but the way your post reads almost sounds like the phone call will be a sales pitch.
9/1/2013 - "fiancée" (marriage) visa issued
4/6/2013 - married (certificate issued same-day)
5/6/2013 - FLR(M)#1 in person -- approved!
8/1/2016 - FLR(M)#2 by post -- approved!
8/5/2018 - ILR in person -- approved!
22/11/2018 - Citizenship (online, with NDRS+JCAP) -- approved!
14/12/2018 - I became a British citizen.  :)

Haha sorry about that. I’m working on an idea for a startup but I have no desire to pitch at this stage just to understand if my hypothesis is on the right track.

Vaguely the idea is around making travel more affordable but I don’t want to bias the research by giving more away. If you’d be up for sharing your own experiences with me I’d happily fill you in on the details.

So this is entirely a personal project and not sponsored by a larger company? (I have friends who do consumer research and benchmarking in the UK.)

Nah it’s just me. But if a company wants to throw money at me i wouldn’t say no! You can look at my past posts about my trials and tribulations trying to apply for a graduate entrepreneur visa a few years back.

Awesome. I'm newer here (just moved last month) but figured it was a valid question! Good luck with your project :)

I'm not really a phone call kind of person, but if you set up a survey monkey and post the link - I'll be on it.   :D

Right I wasn’t anticipating so many people being phone avoiders like myself!

I will try to hack something together this evening or tomorrow.

Same. Either survey monkey or happy to chat on gchat or Facebook messenger (or PM here). I am happy to do a call if absolutely necessary, but it's definitely not preferred. Don't have a problem helping give the information though.

I would consider making an exception to "no phone calls" for the FWC hahahahahahah

You might also want to reach out to people on www.reddit.com/r/expat and www.reddit.com/r/expats if you create a survey (just make sure you specify that you're specifically looking for Americans in the UK if that is specifically who you're aiming it at as there are alllll types of expats on there). People post their surveys on there all the time and it can be helpful.

No offence to you, I’m just wary of giving my number out, I get spammed enough by people telling me I’ve been in a car accident

Hahaha it's no problem. I'm putting together a SurveyMonkey now, but I'd be more up for a phone call on gChat or Facebook Messenger if you're still up for it

Alrighty y'all I've made a SurveyMonkey. It's 5 questions very open-ended so feel free to write as much or as little as you want.
