I'm old
« on: February 22, 2018, 09:51:20 AM »
One of my employees just told me she turned 18 in 2011.  And she's a proper professional grown up.

MY GOD I'M OLD!!!

Yep - I work with a guy who was 12 when I first applied for a job at our company (I applied for graduate research scientist position straight out of uni, but didn’t get it).

P.S. I think he also turned 18 in 2011!

Mmhmmm......  We've got 17/18 year old apprentices starting here soon (interviewing now).  Usually get a wave of them every September and well that really makes you feel old.

I bet!

The youngest we get is about 22-23, because you must have at least a bachelors degree to get the job and then there's about a year of classroom and on-the-job training before you're qualified.

Nothing like an intern to make you feel ancient.  People born in 2000 will be 18 this year.   :o

Really. It used to pain me to be hiring PhD-level faculty who were not born until after I was already out of high school and working for a living. 8)

Daughter laughs at me now and says I'm "doing the old lady thing" if I call a young lady "hon" or mention "what a nice young man" a delivery guy was, etc. ::)

I'm the 2nd oldest in my office... I will be 55 this year, and there is a woman sits next to me that is 65.  But everyone else is in their 20's and early 30's.  None of them can spell properly, none of them fully know when an address is in England or Scotland.  They all just talk about clubbing and Snapchat and 'celebrities' and drinking Venoms, and going for a sunbed.  There is a 21 year old boy in here who gets botox on his forehead and a 23 year old girl who gets it in her lips.  There are 2 new girls, early 20's, who both have long blonde hair done up in a bun, and absolutely identical makeup... full-on makeup, like a Vegas showgirl.  I genuinely cannot tell these girls apart... they both look exactly the same.   I feel like an alien from a distant planet next to these people!  :o ???

And the police are getting younger every day. ;)

Yes!  I have seen absolute CHILDREN protecting our streets!   ;D ;D ;D

I feel like I never see ANYONE over "a certain age" working in offices here.  It makes me worry for my longevity in the workplace in the UK....   :-\\\\

This is an actual concern for me because I work in IT. I had to stop making Web pages because it's a youngster's job and start working with databases. Management wants their Web designer to be ridiculously young and the guy who manages the database to be old and experienced.

28 means you were born the year before I graduated highschool.  I don't feel old enough to be your mother, but it's technically possible... if I had been a less geeky teen.
9/1/2013 - "fiancée" (marriage) visa issued
4/6/2013 - married (certificate issued same-day)
5/6/2013 - FLR(M)#1 in person -- approved!
8/1/2016 - FLR(M)#2 by post -- approved!
8/5/2018 - ILR in person -- approved!
22/11/2018 - Citizenship (online, with NDRS+JCAP) -- approved!
14/12/2018 - I became a British citizen.  :)

Oh my goodness kiss of Death, were you born after the fall of the Berlin Wall?  I've got a pair of binoculars older than you, and a backpack.  I actually could have been your father except for the apparent good judgement of your mother.
What a bizarre turn this thread has taken.  It's JF KIMBERLEY'S fault.
