😯Remdies for Crunchy towels...😯
« on: March 11, 2018, 03:00:03 PM »
I'm sure this issue has been addressed before, but does anyone know a product I can use to get nice soft towels without a clothes dryer?
I've tried the detergents with the "softener" and they still leave my towels stiff after air drying.
Any tips y'all ?
( besides ironing them, cause that's soooo not gonna happen..😘)
Thanks.  xx

We don't use any products beyond normal washing powder, but I find a good firm shake straight out of the washing machine helps. When I flip them over (whether they're inside or outside) I give towels another good shake.

When the weather is warmer or there's a nice breeze, hang drying outside helps avoid crunchiness if you've got the space.

Add 1/2 cup white vinegar to the final rinse. Vinegar is a natural softener. Shake, shake, shake before hanging out to dry. Extra points for hanging outside on a windy day as the wind will help fluff them.

When I switched to my homemade detergent that's just washing soda and grated soap they got softer, so maybe adding a teaspoon of washing soda to your regular soap would help?

Related: where do you find plain vinegar here? I used to buy it by the gallon for cleaning and laundry purposes but haven't been able to find comparable here :(

I'm OK with smaller containers if I can buy it in the shops, I feel like it must have a different name? I also can't spend much time in the laundry aisle and my husband hasn't ever used it so that hasn't helped much. I found all the cooking vinegar!

You can buy it anywhere with the vinegar (think table and cooking vinegar).

Ah, that's malt though. I don't want that on my clothes or surfaces :( in the US white vinegar is only acetic acid and comes from corn not wheat.

It's distilled though.  It's the only kind you'll find here (at least in my experience).

So, your comments made me realise what I needed to search for. Looks like heinz is one of the only companies here to do a corn derived distilled vinegar here like I'm used to. Heinz White Vinegar 473ml Apparently I am not the only expat who doesn't like malt vinegar :)

I buy large containers of vinegar at Costco for £2.50 although this past weekend they only had malt.

Fabric softener also makes your towels less absorbent.

The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.
