Need to attach UK payslips to US tax return?
« on: April 09, 2010, 02:59:22 PM »
As an American living and working full-time in Scotland, I have now finished my federal tax return with H&R Block, and I have printed and signed the return to send to the IRS.

Step 2 of H&R Block's filing instructions says to attach a copy of each "W-2, W-2G, and 2439" -- none of which apply to me as I have only foreign earned income already excluded on form 2555-EZ.

Do I need to attach my payslips as evidence of my foreign wages? Or do I just need to retain them in case I am audited?

Also do I need to attach statements of interest accrued to me on my foreign savings accounts, or only report the amount?

Many thanks,
Sidney

You don't need to send any of those things, just keep them for your records and in case of audit.
Arrived as student 9/2003; Renewed student visa 9/2006; Applied for HSMP approval 1/2008; HSMP approved 3/2008; Tier 1 General FLR received 4/2008; FLR(M) Unmarried partner approved (in-person) 27/8/2009; ILR granted at in-person PEO appointment 1/8/2011; Applied for citizenship at Edinburgh NCS 31/10/2011; Citizenship approval received 4/2/2012

The question is confused - it starts by saying there is only earnings and then goes on to talk about savings accounts.  There may be a UK pension plan or other itens not mentiioned which H & R Block would not know what to do with.  It sounds like at least FBARs are also needed.

Thank you both for your replies -- very helpful.

Currently I have no UK pension currently and my accounts never exceeded $10,000 in 2009, so I believe there is no need for FBAR.
