Peeps - go see him in concert if you can!
« on: April 25, 2007, 07:44:44 PM »
Kind of tagging off the Billy Bragg thread, for those of you who like activist-oriented music and/or a kind of folksy sorta-rockabilly sound...go see this singer/songwriter if you can:

http://www.saddle-creek.com/tours/schedulesbody.html#brighteyes

The UK dates are in early July - though in London, Birmingham, & Scotland only. :(  I can't make it to any of those mid-week, and my in-laws are coming to visit the end of that week.

I love, love, love this band/singer-songwriter!!!  Just can't say enough how amazing that I find his music, lyrics (his lyrics are seriously poetic), sound - the whole enchilada.  And his new album is definitely his best yet, IMO.  He's been favorably compared to Dylan, but I hear all sorts in his music & he seems to work it all together into his own sound.  For those of you on the religious side of things, I'm afraid his lyrics have the potential to offend - but I have no problem with them.

The video of his new single is on Youtube & great fun! ;)

(Stick with it because the payoff is at the end - hee hee!)

He is one of those singers who doesn't really have a very good voice - sort of like Bragg, Dylan, etc.  And being from Nebraska, he sounds like someone from around the area that I originated.

I hope he does alright on this UK tour.  I think he got some stick, and rightly so, for (when he was intoxicated) insulting John Peel in a fit of bad behavior, on his last swing through these parts.  So hopefully, he will redeem himself this time around.

I like it, Carolyn! Thanks for posting. I wouldn't be able to make it to any of those concert dates, but I like the music a lot.  ;D

Glad that you liked it!  I have his four last major albums & they've gotten progressively better & better.  At first, it was an acquired taste 'cause of the rough voice & some tracks he does a bit of weird stuff with feedback, scratchy voice recordings & some electronic tricks...but eventually it just became addictive!  'Rock music's boy genius' indeed. :)

He's ripping off Yeats (The Second Coming) a bit on Four Winds, but it really works!

What's his name?

Conor O'Berst

Is it Bright Eyes?  Or is Bright Eyes the name of the band?

His name is used interchangeably, it seems, with Bright Eyes.  However, I think Bright Eyes is actually the name of the band.  If anyone knows better or differently, let them speak. :)

Seriously, if he keeps on his current progression -- I think he is really going to be 'a name' some 40 years on from now.  (If he can manage to stay on the wagon, and hold it together -- I think he's making progress there.  I may have to eat my piece of humble pie, and I hate to doom the poor fellow with ambitious prognostications as when he was hinted as a 'modern age Dylan', but I wouldn't be surprised if. later in his musical career, he ends rating right up there with Dylan, Johnny Cash or others of similar fame/reputation/standing for contributions to the musical arts & society. -  Wow!  That's a long sentence.  Hee hee. :P)
