This news might well assist some readers of this Board :-

Quote
Our online visa application system, Visa4UK, will be offline for maintenance from 0600 BST on Tuesday 1 September 2009 for 24 hours.  You will not be able to apply online, or access your application, during this time.  If you have booked an appointment through Visa4UK for either 1 or 2 September you will need to print off your appointment confirmation and a copy of your application before this date.

If you require urgent travel to the UK, for example, to attend a funeral or for urgent medical treatment, you should contact your nearest visa application centre.

We apologise for any inconvenience.

(as per this UKBA webpage)

Given that readers of this Board are not just in the UK, I emphasise that the closure period is for "0600 BST on Tuesday 1 September 2009 for 24 hours", and that BST stands for British Summer Time.

California is, what, 8 hours behind the UK? So for you the 24-hour downtime starts at 10.00.pm on 31st August, so will clearly be over by 2nd September.

But not sure biometrics are affected.
