I didn’t plan to put NHS to the test, but
« on: July 20, 2022, 12:12:22 AM »
On May 29, I found a hard lump on my breast.  Called my g.p. the next morning and found out “I found a breast lump” are magic words guaranteeing an instant appointment.  G.P. referred me to breast clinic and I was told NHS guarantees an appointment within 2 weeks.  Figured it would take longer due to Jubilee celebrations, but no, appointment was June 13.  Between 3 and 5 pm, I had the following: mammogram, doctor consultation, ultrasound, hi def ultrasound, ultrasound directed core biopsy, and another consult with doctor.  Whirlwind speedy, no waiting around.  10 days later, pathology results, invasive ductal carcinoma, 4 days after that surgical consult where options were discussed.  I have a specific nurse assigned to me along with a surgical/oncology team.  Had pre-op health testing, and radioactive isotope injection on July 12, and surgery on July 13.  I will get pathology report on the 29 of July with further treatment plan.  I know I’ll have radiotherapy, hopefully won’t need chemo, but that depends on pathology.

I can report the whole process was speedy and kindhearted.  Astonishingly quick and professional.  A+ treatment, truly.  The breast clinic is state of the art.  I’d rather not have breast cancer at all, but if I have to have it, I’m glad to have it here.

Oh Katoo!  I'm so sorry about the diagnosis but glad you made the call.  Yes, the NHS is absolutely brilliant in times like this.

Keep us posted as I will worry about you!!  Here's to hoping no chemo!

More surgery on August 23rd.  Didn’t get clear margins.  If we don’t get it after the second surgery, he will do a mastectomy.  Waiting on an oncoscore to find out if I need chemo, expect it back by Friday.

They move fast.

I got clear margins on the second surgery.  I’ve started taking a hormone blocker called Letrozole, will get bone strengthening infusions every six months, and will be starting radiotherapy in two weeks.  I’m now considered NED (no evidence of disease).  My treatment now consists of things to prevent reoccurrence.  I’m very grateful this was caught early as it was Grade 3, the most aggressive type, but we caught it before it had a chance to spread.

Ah, your update is here. Wonder news Katoo. Not about the aggressive nature but the NED status!  I’ll toast to you tonight!

I got my first bone strengthening infusion Friday.  Easy peasy. Tiny jab, likely no larger than a Covid or flu jab.

Feel free to PM me if you want to stay in touch on our journeys.
