Settlement Visa Question - Length of Stay
« on: October 26, 2009, 12:54:40 AM »
I was wondering what anyone else put for the questions "how long do you intend to stay in the UK" and the date you intend to leave?  I'm in the process of completing my spousal visa app and was a bit thrown off by this.  So far, I just put "permanently" for the length of stay, but for the "leave date" put the date that my current passport expires.  Thoughts?

You did exactly the right thing, well done.

Thanks so much for calming my nerves!  I'm sure I'm just freaking out unnecessarily over everything, but want to make sure that everything is submitted correctly.  :)

Related question:

"Purpose of Visit" - do I put in "to live with my husband"?

(yep. pre-filling out the online ap.  I figure this way if there's anything I'm confused about, I have time to work it all out)

Also, I'm assuming under the section where it asks for any other name you've gone by is where I would put my maiden name (full name? or just last?) as I plan on changing my passport over to the married name before applying.

For the "Purpose of Visit" question I put "Settlement/to be with my husband," so I think you're ok there.  :)

I believe that for the given name section you want to put your maiden name, but I'm not totally sure as I'm not changing my name.  If you're changing your passport however, that may be different and I would definitely include both names in there.  I also realised when applying that all passports you have (even expired) will need to be submitted with the application so that's something to keep in mind.

Hope that helps...I just completed my application so hopefully I did it correctly!

Fortunately, I have all my previous passports, so there's no problem there. And yes, my given name will be my married name at the time I apply, since I'm changing my name first.  The only part i'm not sure on is if under "previous names" I put my full maiden name or just the last name.

I listed my full previous names (because some people change their middle names also when they get married).

Okay, thanks.  I intend on becoming "Rebecca Jane [Tim's last name]", but I suppose if I just write my maiden last name, they might think that's what I went by without the Rebecca Jane!

LOL...I think most of them are pretty intelligent so either way, they *should* know what you mean.

Something else to remember--they'll have your marriage certificate, and if it's anything like mine it has my maiden and married name on it, so if by chance they happen to get confused they can look on that for any clarification (though like TarnLover said, it's a pretty high chance they'll manage to figure it out).
