Some encouraging news re:citizenship
« on: March 12, 2008, 11:42:09 AM »
Evidently one of Lord Goldsmith's proposals is:

"Reducing the fee charged for becoming a British citizen from £655, with a larger discount for foreigners who apply as soon as they become eligible."

Now that would be good!  I was planning on applying ASAP anyway just to avoid price hikes and added complications, it'd be great if I could actually pay less!

"Reducing the fee"

 :D HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I don't think the HO will EVER reduce an immigration fee if they are not compelled to. Don't hold your breath.

I was thinking that myself.  Maybe reduced based on how much they want to raise it.

They will reduce it for people who naturalise as soon as they qualify...which makes me think that it will go up for those who don't.

Probably a moot point for me, unless it takes effect before this September.

Just bumping this topic again.  Vicky, is there any update on this?  I have looked over and over at the Home Office/UK immigration site and not found any mention of this.  Would love for it to be true!
I refuse to answer that question on the grounds that I don't know the answer.

This text needs VERY CLOSE examination to gain an understanding of the proposal.  Goldsmith's proposal is based upon the premise that those who become eligible are different from those whose eligibility is deferred and therefore cannot apply when they are eligible.  Word games.  Semantics.  It is not just a blanket reduction for everyone.

Anyway, smart money says they are not going to decrease *ANY* fees until the biometric roll-out is finished in 2015.  By that time the fees are likely to have trebled (ILR in the 3 - 4 grand region).  I didn't respond into the thread because of that.   >:(
