Small note about the above..UK measuring cups do not hold the same amount as American! I have found this out recently after living here almost 15yr and wondering why some of my USA recipes weren't coming out quite right...If you plan on using USA recipes I would bring USA measuring cups and also buy some measuring cups from here for UK recipes..just my opinion.

Agreed! They're not the same!

However, I convert all US measurements into grams and do my baking that way. It's more precise and just works better for me. But if you're not into that then I'd suggest bringing your US measuring cups.

I've never have had problems with UK measuring cups, but then I tend to eyeball a lot of ingredients when I cook and never have had any issues. I guess its a ymmv situation. ;)

Maybe that's why your macaroons aren't shiny enough...  ;) ;)

Agreed! They're not the same!

I've also had trouble.  We have a UK liquid measuring cup that does mL and cups.  Totally different measurements from my US liquid measuring cup.  Doesn't much matter for cooking, but it certainly does for baking!

So this is why some of baking seems to be off.

While this isn't something I wish I brought because I ask everyone to bring some with them... I just wish the UK sold regular ole, yellow boxed cheerios. I hate the sugar coated ones and I have ate cheerios for breakfast roughly 3-4 days a week for... oh I don't know 30 years. (I'm 31)

Yeah, I know! My kids didn't like the honey-coated ones so every time Grammy came to visit she would bring plastic zip bags of the "real" Cheerios in her luggage.

I didn't know that!  One more thing to add to the list...  :)

I was thinking recently of all the products I use in the US for cleaning that are only available in titchy sizes in the UK.

Baking soda -- I just bought a 4 lb. box in Market Basket, use it for all kinds of things beside "baking"

White vinegar -- mix it with the soda to clear drains. Fun!

Rubbing alcohol -- good for polishing chrome

Our Sainsbury's carries the giant white vinegar bottles most of the time.  According to mysupermarket, it's at Asda and Tesco as well:

The jars are good for storing drinks or to use as vases.  I like putting water in them so it looks like we have a bunch of moonshine stored up.

That one is spiced, with mixed spice.  I just want plainy-plain ole white vinegar, but I'll keep looking around for a bigger bottle.  I bought the small plain one at Morrisons last week, but already through it all already - lol!

All the farm shops around here have giant bottles of vinegar in autumn when it's pickling season!
