MIL was bought an AC unit as she can't handle this heat........is it weird that I think it's weird that you need to put ice in it?!

Not at all, that sounds a little primitive to me!  ;D

THANK YOU! So glad it wasn't just me thinking .....ice....? You're using electricity to power the fan to blow the cool air from the ice anyways......why?!

What?!?  Mine plugs in and has a vent to remove the hot air.  No ice was sacrificed!

Where are you gonna get enough ice for that?  Bags from Tesco?  Maybe you should check that they read the instructions properly.

Why not just put a few beers in the ice, put your feet on the ice and crack a beer?

I remember seeing on the Internet a few years back where you could buy ice-powered (for want of a better term) coolers, yes.   :)

We went with a Windchaser 9000 and it cooled a 15x15 room down from 95F to a tolerable 82F, and condensed the moisture and used it to cool the motor before expelling it out the vent tube to the outside. Lovely unit, on wheels, very practical. We left it behind when we moved over here in the firm hope/belief/prayer that we would never need it again. Ever.

Had the Windchaser for about 10 years, only ran it a few days each year, and it was as good on the day we gave it to a friend as it had been when we brought it home. Not sure they make them any longer, but if so I'd highly recommend it as it has an air purifier and can also just function as a room fan.

Ice?!?!?!

I like jimbo's idea.  In fact that's what we did after work.  Minus the ice.  Just the beer part.

Oh they absolutely read the directions correctly which is why I was so confused! I read it myself and was like ".....sorry what???" (not out loud because I didn't know how abnormal it really was or if it was just me) But yeah... You're meant to just buy bags of ice!

Why not just put a few beers in the ice, put your feet on the ice and crack a beer?

If it were for us, I definitely would LOL ....although if it were for us, I'd buy a proper AC.

I live in Houston and right now it's 7am and a rather pleasant morning since it's only 75F with 99% humidity. But it won't be as hot as it's known to be at this time of year but that humidity makes everything feel so much hotter. Yesterday it was 95F but the "feels like" temperature was 105F.
This time last year, my a/c broke down. It took five days to get it repaired. It was truly miserable. Since that day, I always say add a prayer the genius of:

Willis Carrier and Robert Lopez.

I live in Houston

Houston is as hot/sticky as I've ever felt. It's like New Orleans turned up a notch.
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC
