Obviously this is a controversial law, but I think it hasn't been in effect for long enough to know whether or not it's going to be a successful law.  I'm glad it's going to stay in effect, because I know there are a variety of pilot programs in the law that are trying out new ways of providing health care to see what works and what can be done better.

I think either way it's going to be tough on a lot of folks. Employer healthcare is going to become more expensive or else the employer will insist their workers find their own coverage. In Massachusetts, if the employer offers health insurance the worker has to take it -- even if it sucks.
But it is a step in the right direction. What I would like to see is some kind of curtailment of doctors ordering prescriptions and/or procedures that they know the insurance company covers -- without it really being medically necessary.  The insurance companies offer all this coverage, which is great if the patient really needs it, but often its not. This will only push up the cost of premiums, co-pays and so on.

I'm happy about this, but mostly because I want to see some Republicans eat crow. However, I'm still disappointed we don't have a public option.

I was happy too, until a friend of mine pointed out that it might have the effect of riling up the Republicans even more than they usually are, and galvanising them for the election.

DW says it still won't help her daughter get healthcare and she'll just get fined.

Not sure myself how true that is, I'm just looking forward to watching Bill O'Reilly on Fox who has been saying for months that "it will get thrown out, no doubt about that" - a full humble pie heading his way, I hope he's hungry!

Apparently, there are a lot of Republicans saying they're going to move to Canada to escape Obamacare. Do you want to tell them or should I?

I said the same thing when Bush was re-elected. Then, I found out it's not as easy to escape as I thought!  If they all leave, it would certainly make things easier, wouldn't it?  hehehe  :P

eta: I would have moved to Canada years ago if I'd had a closer relative to sponsor me -- for the opposite reason!!

I'm a huge supporter of all the Blue states seceding from the Union. I could get behind that!

If you don't buy healthcare you pay a tax of 1% of your income. So, if her daughter makes $20,000 per year, that's $20. Many states already offer subsidized healthcare plans for low-income people. She should do some investigating into what is available in her state if she can't afford to purchase regular healthcare.

CNN's been offering a lot of info on "what it means to you"

I think they're tweeting a lot about it too.

1% would actually be $200, but I see what you are saying. Don't think thats enough really because it needs to be funding the healthcare.
It really is an half-baked scheme to be honest, it's a step in the right direction and hopefully can be built upon but it doesn't come close to addressing the problems. I think Obama has bent over backwards to appease the right, he should have just pushed it through with a public option in it. Time and again I think he has backed off and tried to appease the right and the still call him a socialist!

Sorry, I didn't move my decimal point enough places! Thanks for getting my point though, it's not a lot of money. I'm not clear on what this tax is going to be paying for. If someone knows, I'd be interested in hearing it.

I would like to see a public option, but it's going to take some time to come up with one. And you're right, no matter what he does, he's a socialist.

I think there's still a lot of stuff they haven't worked out yet -- or are sitting on for whatever reason.

Whenever we hear the "socialist" epithet, we roll our eyes  ::)  Reminds me of the "Commie-leftie-pinko" names that were thrown around back in the 60's.
