Hispanic food
« on: October 12, 2018, 10:16:37 AM »
Is there anywhere I can get Hispanic food, whether it’s a restaurant or grocery store?
Specifically things like queso fresco, tamales, pupusas, etc

We have an old thread here. Maybe some of it might be relevant still?

I've bought tamales from Mex Grocer, and they were great!

One cuisine the UK is shite at... Mexican food.

But you can easily buy everything you need to make your own including masa to make your own tortillas.

I have a lot of stuff shipped over from the States. Vitacost.com has some things, but their website is schizophrenic. If you catch a good sale, and usually on your first order, you can get $30 off a $100 order, which just about covers the shipping.

I've ordered masa off Amazon, and it's fine (although perilously near it's Best Before date). Seriously overpriced, but fine.  ;D

I have a ton of recipes for making things like your own empenada dough, sazon seasoning mix, enchilada sauce from scratch, plus some others. If you want any, just let me know.

OMG yeah having same issue...ordered green plantains over summer but it was like 13 of them and expensive and not green enough for patacones/tostones...brought back Goya Sazon from home...I am in northeast and It’s hard to find stuff here and we don’t drive...we struggle to find Japanese stuff too..online just tends to be expensive and plus shipping...but everytime I have to make what becomes a day trip on a bus just to go shopping I become more and more accepting of paying shipping for stuff.  We found thaikhun at metro mall for Thai food but it’s two hours and two buses to get there...it should be like a 30 min drive...yet here I am on a forum when I should be taking more practice tests for my theory exam...the worst.

Awww! Good luck on your theory test. It's truly challenging how far you have to go for things over here, I can't imagine not driving now that I have the freedom.

I really wish green plantains were common here. They were always in my US grocery store and a staple of my baking on top of the Hispanic dishes (they make awesome gluten free pancakes). I guess after the Christmas madness I'll have to see if they have them at the farm shop with the international foods.

This thread was started by a Puerto Rican! I'm Puerto Rican as well and have had a hell of a time trying to find Goya stuff. I just bring my beloved adobo back every time I visit Florida, plus a few other things... Luckily, my local Tesco carries plantains so I can have tostones whenever I want. However, paying a pound per plantain is dear
