It sure seems to be working as migration figures went down by 87,000 this year alone....

Actually, it's the opposite of working. Immigration figures actually rose by about 80,000 after the new rules were put in place - they went from 250,000 in 2011 to 330,000 in 2014!
As far as I can tell, the ONLY reason the migration figures have fallen so much is because of Brexit, with lots of EU citizens leaving the UK and less moving here... it appears to have nothing to do with the UK visa immigration rules.
If the UK hadn't voted to leave the EU, I bet the immigration figures wouldn't have fallen... or at least not by as much as they have.
Now that they have fallen though, we're back down to the same migration figures we had BEFORE the new rules were implemented... so basically, the government have made no progress in regards to lowering their figures to 100,000 in the last 5 years
