What should I start to save?
« on: November 20, 2008, 12:29:05 PM »
Okay, so this is probably at least 8-12 months off for me, depending on when Tim and I get engaged and married, but are there things I should start saving or locating *now* that I will need when we eventually go to apply for my visa?  I don't want to throw anything out that I might wind up needing!

The current "plan", if you can even call it a plan when we're not yet engaged is to get married in the US and then I'll move to the UK.  I simply don't have the support money in savings to handle applying for a fiance visa to the UK first.

I don't know offhand, to be honest.  He did tell me he makes enough money that he could support the two of us, but I'm sure that doesn't help!  I'll figure out a way to ask him.

If he makes enough to support the two of you then of course it helps.

I think you'd better ask him outright before you start talking seriously about marriage.

You're probably right.  I just hate asking!

OTOH, we'll need to know eventually for visa purposes.

Is there a magic number that gets looked for? And does it matter that he has Sunday pay (at time and a half OT) that wouldn't be counted in the figure for his salary?

I googled the recent job opening, and it's base is £26,800.  I don't know how frequent raises are given though to figure out his salary (he's worked for them for 15 years)

If he has worked there for 15 years, he should have tax statements and payslips showing what he earned. You shouldn't have to google  ???

I agree.

Yeah, but he's at work right now, so I can't ask him until he gets home this evening.

Good to know.  I'll ask him tonight about salary. I do know the figure from his most recent pay stub, if that's any help.

Yes, that would help.  However, as you have not yet discussed this with him, it is probably best that you don't disclose his salary without his consent.

Could I PM you with the amount after I talk to him? I don't feel comfortable posting it publicly even with him having given me the figure.
