Divorce Advice

Hello folks,

Unfortunately, my wife and I have reached a stage where we can no longer continue our relationship and need to get our divorce completed. The main concern is the cost of the divorce. Between us, we are amicably ending our relationship and have already agreed between us how we want to split whatever little we have.

What are least costly options to pursue? I'm British and she is a US citizen. We got married in New York. She has already left to settle back in New York.

She's spoken to a lawyer and got a quote and the whole process comes out to around $5,000.

Are there alternative ways for us to do it? Perhaps something online? or could I do it in the UK, would that count officially even though our marriage was done in the US?

If everything is amicable and settled, why not file the paperwork yourselves?  In either country.  The marriage is valid around the world and the divorce will be valid around the world. Just need the paper.

New York is a "no fault" divorce state, so you have that going in your favor. There is a residency period required for one of you, though. You might want to read the following for info:

Just a side bit, if her U.K. visa is still valid, you should notify the home office.
