Retirement benefits
« on: May 09, 2022, 10:02:28 AM »
I wonder if anyone can offer some advice.  My US husband and I (British) moved back to the UK in 2010.  He started receiing his US social security + pension when we were still in the USA in 2009.  For the 6 years I was in the US I worked for approximately 4 years so didn't build up enough for US social security.  Fast forward 12 years - he has now left the UK to move back to the US on his own. (I am 65; he is 70).

I am working full time but with a mortgage am started to struggle.  Can I claim any part of his US social security?

Unless I'm mistaken, when you reach the US retirement age (66 years and 4 months for you) then you can claim Social Security Retirement Benefits which will equate to 50% of your husband's benefits. If you are divorced, you are still entitled provided you don't remarry. Your marriage has to have lasted 10 years or longer.
