Council Tax Bill
« on: January 10, 2023, 07:42:34 AM »
I am not entirely sure how council tax works. I understand I'll need council tax bill for FLR(M) but I am confused about how to request the council tax bill. My husband rents 1 room and there is another tenant renting the other bedroom while the rest of the house is shared. There are separate locks for the rooms and all utilities are included in the rent payment like water, heating, & Internet. We live in Cambridge and according to what I see on the Cambridge city council website under who pays council tax, we live in an HMO property. Therefore, the council tax bill is in the landlords name and the landlord is making the payments. There may be something in our tenancy agreement explaining that we pay partly through rent. Are we supposed to ask the landlord for the council tax bill? The landlord clarified that its in their name when we asked yesterday.

The council tax bill is going to be completely useless to you if it's not in your name, as it's intended to be proof of residence.

I don't know what the requirements are for FLR, but i work for a bank and the documents we accept for proof of residence are : council tax bill, driving licence, utility bill (no mobile or broadband bills), or a bank statement if it has come through the post, not printed off online.

Does that mean it is not relevant or required in our situation? I figured it cannot be used to demonstrate cohabitation because our names are not on it. I was confused as I thought council tax bill was a requirement for the application. In case it is needed to prove some other aspect, I wanted to know if I needed to ask the landlord for it since we cannot request it from the city council.

So maybe check and see what other docs would be acceptable...

Thank you! That is very helpful!

I will look further into it to find out if I need the council tax bill for some other reason for FLR. I have letter from GP, joint bank statements, and phone bill for correspondence. I believe the tenancy renewal may also work to demonstrate we both reside at this address.

Normally the council tax bill is required as proof that your accommodation is all above board. To be safe,  I might just ask your landlord to write a letter stating that he's responsible for the council tax rather than you.

For your correspondence evidence, which is the proof that you live together, you need mail from at least 3 different sources. The CT bill is often used as one of those sources too. You've already got 3 there though so that's covered.

Good to know! Then we do not need the council tax bill. We can just include a letter signed by him stating its in his name and he pays for the council tax.
