So this past May, Athena's asthma seemed to be flaring up again. However, we couldn't get her to take her inhaler (and you can't force a cat to take one; they get upset and have even more trouble breathing), and she wasn't eating which meant she wasn't getting her steroid either. She also kept fighting sleep, as she needed to be awake to breathe. Of course we were very worried and kept taking her to the normal vet and the emergency vet. Then we got a call from the emergency vet saying they couldn't stabilize her off the oxygen and couldn't discharge her. They asked if we wanted to "call it a day." They thought she was too weak for any tests to figure out if something aside from asthma was going on. Of course we were very upset and asked for some more time to decide. They checked her into the veterinary surgeons' that shared the office with the emergency vets. One of the surgeons took a look at her and thought it was likely her larynx collapsing. So we agreed to bloodwork, a CT scan, endoscopy, etc. It turned out to be a large mass below her trachea that was obstructing her breathing! He removed it and wasn't sure she'd make it through the night, but she did. When I went to pick her up, he showed me the CT scan and said he couldn't believe she survived with how obstructed her airway was.
I then took her home. I'd been instructed to give her soft foods only and to keep the food and litter near her. Well, the sweet kitty wanted to go back to normal right away. Even though I'd moved her bowl near her in the bedroom, she still led me into the kitchen the next morning. She was breathing well and acting like everything was completely normal other than being unable to eat any of the meat in her food. We had a really good couple of months with her but unfortunately the cancer seemed to be coming back a few weeks ago (her throat was making odd noises, she had an awful cought that sounded like she was choking, and she started struggling to breathe again). We had her put to sleep on the 9th. It's been really hard.
