Renewing my US drivers license
« on: March 17, 2023, 08:10:39 PM »
Hi Guys!

Hope you’re all well.

Just wondering if you guys know how I can renew my U.S. drivers license.  It’s due to expire in July this year.

The problem is the address in my license is no longer my address as we have sold the house.  I can use my sisters address as I have a bank account with that address but I think you can only do address changes in person.

Thanks for your input 🙏

It will depend on your state of residence, but most states actually do require that you are resident in order to have a state driving license.

I agree.

I would ask why you want or need to renew it.

Thank you for the reply.

I would like to renew it as I normally visit every year and I drive when I am at home.  Also I don’t know if we let our drivers license expire whether we have to take it again.

I live in the UK now but I do plan to come back home at some point for good.

I think it depends on your state (might require proof of actual physical residency, not just a mailing address in that state), and whether or not they have already implemented REAL ID requirements for new/renewal licenses.

ETA - It also might differ from state to state, but in my old state, if you let your driver's license expire, you do have to go through the whole process again to get another one (including taking the tests).

Understandable why you would want to keep it.

As mentioned above I would check if you are supposed to resident in the State to have a driver's licence.  If not then if you have an accident you may find that you are not insured, whereas driving on your UK licence while visiting the USA is perfectly legal.

One of the reasons our daughter has let her California licence expire is part of the process to avoid being considered a resident and then taxed by California as a resident.
