Passport Question - Citizenship Application
« on: May 05, 2023, 08:22:01 PM »
Hi all,

I didn't know whether to reply to my exisiting thread or create a new one but I know some forums don't appreciate bumping old threads so here's a new one! Apologies if this is wrong!

I had a question: when you apply for citizenship, can you still travel outside the UK. The application online says passports provided must be originals but also says do not send physical documents to the Home Office. My understanding is this will be much like the past visa applications in the case of we retain the passport but I was under the impression you can travel outside the UK/CTA while the citizenship application is processing (with current passport and ILR BRP)?

Just wanted to check if it was possible to travel as my wife and I are planning to go back to the USA to see her family in November this year. We obviously won't apply for citizenship right now if this means there is a risk we won't be able to travel then.

I hope this makes sense but feel free to ask further questions if necessary!

Thanks!

Hello! I applied for and received citizenship last year (2022). The citizenship application is not like the visa applications. You don't send off your documents, you just upload them so you retain your passport throughout. You can also travel while the application is processing and up until you actually receive your citizenship, as your status in the country is not affected while it is processing (you retain ILR). It is only once you actually receive citizenship by attending your ceremony and receiving your certificate of naturalisation that travel becomes complicated, as you will need a British passport. Now, people have been successful in flying back on their American passports with their naturalisation certificate (usually get pulled aside while they check things, but will let you in).

Anyways, long answer short- yes, you can travel during the citizenship application. Good luck!
