US Living in UK. Interest
« on: June 23, 2023, 12:18:06 PM »
Hi.
With some savings paying >5% - wanted to ask a basic question.

If I am a US citizen living in UK with savings, can I earn interest and be exempt from US taxes if I am no longer working (eg. Income is 0).

The benefit is that I will pay 20% tax vs partner paying their higher tax rate (bc i do not earn I am lower tax rate UK and exempt US due to Treaty?)

Any obvious cons of this?

If your income is 0, then you won't even pay 20% tax in the UK - unless you're earning a TON of interest.  I can't answer your US tax question though.

Interest on UK savings is not exempt from US taxes for a USC living in the UK as far as I am aware. My wife and I both are USCs living in the UK and have to declare our interest from UK savings on our US tax return.

However, if your worldwide income is low enough you will not pay taxes in either country.
Dual USC/UKC living in the UK since May 2016
