IRS mailed me a ripped up page?
« on: February 20, 2023, 03:49:20 PM »
Hello, a few weeks ago the IRS requested I send in a page from my return, so I did, and now I have received an envelope from the IRS containing only the page, ripped up! No covering letter or note of explanation. Why on earth would they do this? I haven't seen it yet, my husband texted me from home to say what had arrived. I am unsure what to think. I suppose I need to try to phone them to find out what is going on??

Have you ever heard of anything like this?

That is absolutely bizarre.

I did have a friend many years ago whose job application was ripped up through the mail.  He wasn't a friend at the time, just someone applying for a job, who would be working alongside myself.  My boss showed me the mangled application and together we deciphered enough of it to decide to bring him in for an interview. He got the job, we became good friends and remained so this past 40 years.

I'm just wondering if your page to the IRS had a similar mishap, torn apart by some sorting machine, but even so I would have thought the IRS would have included some explanation when they returned it to you.

I think I might resubmit the page, along with the ripped page with a note to the effect that it looked like the post office had mangled the original and you hope that this one makes it okay.

I am home and have examined the wreckage. It's arrived in a US Post Office envelope, which suggests it was mangled by the US Post Office and returned to me. The IRS hasn't received the document they requested within 30 days. This is not my fault, as I did mail the requested page in good time. I will draft a covering letter and send a new document along with the remnants of what I originally mailed, in the US Post Office envelope.

I need to send this by a courier who will take responsibility for it start to finish. Can you please recommend a service that won't cost me the earth, so that I can avoid the US mail?

Why me!

What a bummer. I would send the mangled document and the US Post Office envelope by FedEx or UPS.

I have drafted a cover letter and am enclosing the requested form, photocopies of the original letter, and the mangled bits in the US Post office envelope. I've photocopied all of it for my records. I will send by UPS.

What a palaver!

You won't believe this, but yesterday (5 months later) I received the OTHER HALF of the pages and the envelope! The US Post Office, what a joke.
