Can they deny a NIN?
« on: June 02, 2005, 10:03:36 PM »
If all goes well with my visa application tomorrow, I'll be entering the UK on a settlement visa as the wife of a UK citizen. I know that when you apply for a NIN, they ask about all visits to the UK, and I did overstay (was there for 10 months total, didn't try to work or use benefits). What will they do? Can they really deny me a NIN? It seems incongruous that immigration would issues visas to overstayers but that the NI people wouldn't issue NINs.

The main purpose of the interview is to make sure you've never been issued a number previously.  I wouldn't imagine that, as long as you have everything required for the interview and can answer all the questions, that you'd have a real problem.

Yeah, worry about first things first.  Get your visa secured (that's the biggie), then you can start stressing about other things.  But, as Peedal said, you shouldn't have a problem with getting an NI number.  And, the interview isn't a stressful thing.  Not anything like what you go through to get a visa.  The main thing they required from me - other than identification and proof of marriage - was proof of actively seeking work.
