When you file for an extension make sure you send enough money to cover your taxes otherwise you will be subject to an underpayment penalty.

Thanks, that's helpful.

Yes. Extending to Oct 15 the fairly easy to do. Several sites make it easy to file. Seems like the smart thing to do to file the UK first and know for sure your UK bill before going down the US route.

Hi All-

I have one more question that is confusing us. So we file in the UK and pay our taxes. Great DONE. Does the UK give us a certificate or a number or a file or SOMETHING to show we have paid taxes in the UK?

When we file in the US we fill out the 1116 Forgien tax credit form and the IRS just trusts that .. "cool they paid all that tax over in the UK and I trust that they are telling the truth on that." There is no receipt from the UK to show we have paid? No number? NO NOTHING?

Thanks.

You will have a complete copy of your HMRC return available should the IRS request it but you don’t need to include a copy with your IRS return. This is our situation each year. I also never include my  pension 1099s etc with my HMRC return, just enter the details but have copies if HMRC ever audit a return.

Our son has no income from the USA so never files an HMRC return,  the taxes are paid using PAYE.

When he files his IRS return he has a little interest that he reports on a made up 1099-INT (like we do for our bank interest) plus an FEIE form to exempt all his earned income. He provides the name and address of his UK company and gross income but doesn’t include a copy of any pay statements.

Hi All,

Sorry if this has been asked before but we are having such a hard time. My retired in-laws have moved back to the UK after many years in the US. They have pension and social security income back in the US and need to file self-assessment here in the UK for the first time ever and going forward. And of course, always file their US taxes.

We are having the hardest time finding a consultant that does both US and UK tax preparation that is not a big corporation that usually handles millionaires.

They are just a couple of old people with some pension income and social security and some IRA income. Our last quote was for almost £5000 including VAT. That's a huge chunk of their yearly income for gawds sake!!!!

Any recommendations?

Thanks so much.

@nwkh What did you decide to do? I'm in a similar boat and desperately want to hire someone as I lose sleep every year (hence the 4am post) come tax time, but the well-qualified tax preparers cost a fortune and I've read mixed things about cheaper options like Greenback taxes (e.g. that they make mistakes, in which case I can do that myself!).
