Tech stuff

So the monitor I bought in 2013 is starting to fail. It is an Asus  VS248H-P.  Apparently they are no longer in production.  I need a decent, 27" or better computer monitor for "at home" use. The only caveats are that it has both HDMI and VGA ports. Doesn't need speakers. Doesn't need heavy-duty gaming capability. Just needs to last another 12 years and cost less than $200. 

Any recommendations?  I've only used Asus for like the last 20 years and have no clue what brands are reliable and which are trash.

You may need to get a VGA adapter at this point, not many monitors will still come with them as a standard port. I'm honestly not sure what the best brands are now, and sadly Newegg has changed a lot (for the worse) since I lived in the US and that's where I bought most things. It might be worth a trip to a charity shop and see what they have in stock for older monitors?

Apparently people here just throw their old monitors away - I haven't found a thrift shop that either has one or takes them in! Even when you want to bin them, they are considered a form of hazardous waste and have to be processed separately (with a fee paid).  I've found a few with VGA and HDMI, thankfully. They're not plentiful, but in the level of monitor I want (no camera, no speakers, no gaming enhancements) they are more common. I have found a couple on Walmart.com that might work. I'm leaning towards this one, but am hoping to find it just a bit cheaper somewhere else.  If I could find a "dumb" TV it would also work, I think. But those are even rarer these days.

That looks pretty good for what you need. Glad you found one! Walmart may be problematic in many ways, but for things like this - very helpful. Especially if their return policy is good.

Here in the UK, used monitors are cheap as chips.  Average price less than 20 quid.  I'd look into Ebay and get something used.  If you really want help, I can get my tech obsessed kid to find something close to you on ebay that matches your specs.   You are actually one of his favourite Americans after the package of cherry sours appeared.

Our local charity shop is overwhelmed with monitors.

Hahahhah! Cherry sours for the win!  I'll get my daughter to look on Ebay for me. She knows Ebay well. Monitors, not so well, but between the two of us perhaps we'll find something cheap.  Recommendations as to a good brand would be appreciated, though.

I miss the UK charity shops. I used to get good stuff in them for reasonable prices.  Some of my living-room furniture came to us that way and is still serving us well over here. Right now I'm sitting here in my "grandpa" sweater that I also got for like five quid at the Heart Foundation shop on Byres Road (or was it Great Western.... memory is fading).  There are a LOT of things I really do miss about living in the UK.  I told my daughter that if we'd have one that billon dollar lottery they had recently I'd get us a flat in Bloomsbury and we could stay there part of the year. But, alas, someone on the West Coast won the lottery, not us.    I'd probably still go to the charity shops even if we had, though!

+1 on the charity shops. Use them all the time.

In 2011 we came over for 7 months, renting an unfinished house. We bought loads of stuff from the charity shops, then donated it all back when we left.

Both our TVs are LG, as is my computer monitor. We like them and no problems in the 8 years or so we have had them.

It was down to the LG and the ASUS.

The ASUS in my price range came with two HDMI and one VGA port, and the LG had no VGA, so I went with the ASUS.  I have a couple of older computers here that I plug in to the monitor from time to time (Windows 7 and earlier) so I needed that VGA port. So they'll bring it round on Sunday -  "ASUS 31.5" 1080P Monitor (VA329HE) - Full HD, IPS, 75Hz, Adaptive-Sync, Eye Care, Low Blue Light, Flicker Free, HDMI, VGA, Wall Mountable, Tilt Adjustable"
