Anyone in the UK done this lately? Wondering how long the embassy in London is taking these days.
Thanks.

Wondered if you renewed your passport and had any learnings to share? How long did it take? Am just about to renew mine...

My daughter asked me about this the other day.  She also needs to renew her US passport through the US embassy this year.

Will definitely come back to update once I've done it! I had been waiting for UK citizenship to come through first to avoid any unnecessary complication, but I'm beyond six months on that now with no end in sight. Giving it another week or so then just going for the US renewal...

I don't know how accurate this is, especially since it was published in March (of this year) and so many US government offices have been gutted of personnel since then, but the article at https://ukimmigrationnavigator.com/american-passport-renewal-in-the-uk/  says it takes 10-12 weeks for standard processing in London and 6-8 weeks for expedited.  They recommend starting the renewal process six to nine months before the passport expires.

Hope that's helpful.

Just to say that I sent off my application to the embassy today. For anyone coming here to find info, I would just direct you to the passport section on the embassy's website and not an external site: https://uk.usembassy.gov/passports/##

There isn't an expedited option if you're renewing abroad as this article suggests. You can however request an emergency passport, although it has stringent use. Details on that also on the embassy website: https://uk.usembassy.gov/emergency-passports/

Will update once I've had it back!

Hope it works out well for you.

Of course, always go with the official website.  I posted the other link as, after searching online for a half-hour for any information on the timeline, it was the only website that came up that offered even a guess/estimate of how long the application turn-around time is.

Again, what happened in the past may not be a good benchmark of how things are running now. There has been tremendous chaos in US governmental offices that has, in some cases, really impacted throughput.

Hi, I haven't been on here in a while but I recently did this. I sent off my passport to the Embassy on 13th of May, I received an email confirming it was In Process on the 21st of May (they state they got it on the 20th of May) and that it would take 4-6 weeks.

I received another email saying that it was Application status: Mailed on the 22nd of May, also stating it would take up to 2 weeks to arrive at my mailing address and I received it back in the mail on the 31st of May.  So not bad!! I used Royal Mail for delivery and return envelope and no issues there.

Just had my passport renewed - 20 calendar days in total. Said I would come back to update once done, so here I am! Ended up sending slightly later than my earlier post indicated I had, accurate timeline below.

Timeline:
6 June: Mailed to embassy via Special Delivery
7 June: Confirmed delivered to embassy via Special Delivery tracking
10 June: Embassy email to confirm receipt of renewal
13 June: US DoS email to say passport received (presumably in the the US)
18 June: US DoS email to say passport has been printed and mailed (presumably from US to embassy)
25 June: Special Delivery return envelope tracking picks up
27 June: Passport (and all supporting documents) received back in single Special Delivery envelope

Just a few notes on process:
Follow the instructions on the embassy website only.
Print application and online payment confirmation and mail it to embassy with supporting documents via Special Delivery. Everything will come back in the return special delivery envelope (not separate as with domestic applications).
Payment - select regular service as there is no expedited via mail. Only expedited is in person at embassy for emergency.
My only frustration was the huge gap of 8 days between my passport mailed notification and receiving it in hand. Research tells me this was because the embassy sends the passports to the US for processing, so when I got that notification it was being sent back to the embassy, and only once the embassy received it did the Special Delivery go out.

Hope this helps!
