Social Security form 7162 Returned
« on: September 05, 2025, 02:58:48 PM »
Hello, in late July, I received form 7162, which I think is the SSA's way of ensuring you're alive, and I filled it out, and signed it, and posted it using the pre-addressed envelope provided. After a month, the letter was returned "undeliverable as addressed, unable to forward." This was meant to go to Wilkes-Barre, PA, but apparently the address the SSA prints on its own envelopes is incorrect. Does anyone have any advice or an alternate address to send this to? Thanks much for any help.

An update for all, within minutes of filling out the form for the FBU, I received the following response:

Thank you for contacting the Federal Benefits Unit at US Embassy London.
Our mailing address is

Federal Benefits Unit

US Embassy

33 Nine Elms Lane

London

SW11 7US

Please mail it to us and we will forward it onto Pennsylvania.

I recently received a letter from FBU stating that ‘since you declared you are working on your latest 7162, please fill out and return enclosed form 7163’. Which was strange as I haven’t worked since January 2020.  E-mailed FBU, they said fill out the form anyway, makes you wonder how many years behind the SSA is on actually reading all these forms they demand🤔.  Perhaps if they actually spent some money so we could respond digitally a clever machine, like a computer say, could weed out the forms that require follow up from the ones that don’t.  (And that has used up my sarcasm quota for the day).

You're right, jhunt16723, maybe if there was something like, say, an artificial intelligence or such like that, they could process the forms online and make it less cumbersome, but I suspect that's some ways off. By the way, after I sent my form 7162 to the FBU, as they directed, it sat in a London mail centre for several days, because, according to Royal Mail tracking, the US Embassy wasn't receiving mail (they called it "item retention") for the first two days of the week after I sent it. Eventually, they sent me a photo of my envelope on top of a bin full of other parcels and letters. I'm sure they'll get right to it and send it off to Wiles-Barre.
