My Social Security payments suddenly reduced by 80%??
« on: February 16, 2026, 01:36:37 PM »
I just received a rather alarming letter from the SSA that my SS payments are being reduced next month from $351 to $68! This is very scary.

There is no reason given anywhere. Same shows on the mySocialSecurity online. Nowhere any reason. I have to file some form SSA-561-U2 in writing if I disagree....

I am UKC with only 6 credits from working in US. Benefit is based on 35% of my wife's (USC) SS which is about $1000 a month.  Both UK resdient.

Does anyone know is anything has changed regarding spousal benfits?

Not sure if this has anyhting to do with it but I got two SSA-1042S forms this year with different amounts. Box 11 claims number in one was my SSN followed by B1 and in the other followed by A.

I can’t offer any suggestions I’m afraid. Very strange.
Dual USC/UKC living in the UK since May 2016

In all eventuality, having 2 conflicting SSA-1042S's is the likely culprit. You need to thoroughly investigate both of these against your own calculations. I suspect that the SSA system has been 'confused' by these conflicting entries and has 'automatically' reduced your SS Retirement benefit.
There has been, (as far as I know), no changes to Spousal benefits. Now if your wife's benefits had been reduced, then there could be some other issue, as of course your benefit is based on her record. Looking at your circumstances, your wife applied for retirement, well before FRA.
Study both SSA-1042S's and try and figure out where the issue originated. Look at last years & your Federal Tax Return for clues. Make copies and create a carefully crafted letter to the SSA to include both conflicting 1042's, via the form mentioned. Take your time and provide a quality reply, you'll get the back pay on appeal. Good luck and please let us know how you get on.
