My girls are 14 and 17, and love them. :) They are quite different.

My oldest daughter aged 10 absolutely loves them. They are funny in a dark humour sort of way.

I only heard of them after arriving here; in a deeply heated conversation about how JK Rowling 'stole' from the Lemony Snicket ideas, and therefore the person I was speaking to refused to read any of the HP series and thinks they should all be boycotted.

Oh? is it similar to the HP stories? I heard there's a new HP coming out. "Half Blood Prince" I think its called. I have read them all but only heard of Lemony Snicket a few days ago.

Apparently it is.  I haven't read them myself, but this person was quite adamant about it.

Well, considering that the first Snicket book was released two years after the first Potter book, I would say your person is quite wrong.

Other than they're all orphans I haven't noticed much similarity myself.

The Baudeliers aren't magical, they're just very extraordinary children. :)

I don't think they are similar to HP at all. I love the series though - love it.
I'm done moving. Unrepatriated back to the UK, here for good!

Well for those who love the series, there's a Lemony Snicket movie starring Jim Carrey that's coming out in December. I've never read the books but I've seen the author on tv and heard him in various NPR interviews, he's a very interesting fellow.

My nieces (8 / 10) read them, and I'm sure my other sisters children will read them in a couple years....they REALLY like them, but from the way my sister describes them, they are quite graphic and "dark" for wee children...

Then again, I grew up with Encyclopida Brown and Ramona....

Sorry I'm a bit late joining in here, but I HIGHLY recommend the Series of Unfortunate Events!  My elder dd (11) has read all of the installments so far (10 or 11....can't remember)....younger dd (8) is up to #6.  They are exceptionally well written and fantastic for building vocabulary.  The author doesn't write "down" to the younger audience.  He's not afraid to use 'big' words, but he does go on to explain what an unfamiliar word or phrase means.  I can't see where the resemblance is to the Harry Potter series, though.

BTW - took the kids to see the movie over the Christmas break.  The cinematography was great.  As is often the case, I think we would have enjoyed the movie more if we hadn't read the books.  Also, I though Jim Carrey was miscast as Count Olaf....the Count is supposed to be sinister, not silly.  But that's just my opinion....feel free to disagree!
When I am grown-up I will understand how BEAUTIFUL it feels to administrate my life effectively.

Until then I will continue to TORCH all correspondence that bores me and to dance NAKED over the remnants of its still glowing embers.

My 11-year-old son LOVES Encyclopedia Brown.  Thrills me to share it with him, because my older one never took to it.
