sherbert?
« on: April 20, 2005, 06:38:06 PM »
Ok, now that I've got the cheese I was looking for, (thanks, everyone) does anybody know if they have anything like orange sherbert here? I don't want the fruit popsicle things, but something more like sherbert, with the orange flavor and the cream. Anybody got any ideas?

most supermarkets will sell it, but it's called 'sorbet'.
Sherbet  here is a type of powdery candy.

I'd think you'd have no trouble at all finding fruit sorbets. I buy the lemon one from Tesco pretty often and it's delish! Yes, sherbet is something completely different over here -- but also nice!

I really love rainbow sherbet but cant find anything that compares over here. Here I also buy Tesco sorbet. Raspberry is my favorite but the lemon helped me get through a lot of bad morning sickness days. I cant remember if I have seen orange though. If anyone sees orange let me know!

If you are a make-your-own kind of person, I can try to dig out my old recipe for Lime Sherbet.  It's really yummy.

Do you have an ice cream maker? That's the easiest way- The recipe is very simple;

3C (750ml) Milk (NOT cream)
1C (250ml) Lime Juice
1C sugar
a drop or two of green food colouring

Combine all ingrediants, stiring until sugar is dissolved and freeze according to the directions on your machine.  Or pour into trays and freeze, removing from freezer and beating till smooth (but not melted) after about 1 hour, and every hour until frozen.

Orange is just as easy with 3C milk, 2 C smooth orange juice and 1 c sugar.

And a bonus recipe (cause I have it out now :) )

Raspberry Sorbet
2/3 cup (150 ml) water
1 quart (1 L) raspberries, fresh or frozen
1/2 cup (125 ml) sugar
2 Tbsp. (30 ml) orange juice
2 tsp. (10 ml) grated lemon peel
2 Tbsp. (30 ml) lemon juice
Combine water, sugar and lemon peel in small saucepan. Bring to a boil on medium heat, stirring
constantly. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Place raspberries, orange juice and lemon juice
in a blender and process at a medium speed until smooth. If desired,
pour both mixtures into ice cream maker canister through a fine strainer or cheesecloth to remove lemon peel
and berry seeds. Stir well. Freeze as directed.

(Blackberry sorbet is just as good! Just substitute blackberries for raspberries - it's going to be berry picking season soon!)

I have another recipe for lime or orange sherbet, but I have never actually used them as they call for Jello so I can't vouch for how good they are. If ya wanna give them a try let me know and I'll post them too.

Aaaaw, I was worried about that. I'd love to have an ice cream maker, but I have such a tiny freezer that I don't think it would fit. Is it hard work doing the beating by hand?

Nope, not at all. You should use an electric mixer and it will work just fine. The main thing is beating it smooth so ice crystals don't form.  Thats why you should put in in the freezer on trays if possible, so it freezes more uniformly.
