Albuquerque, NM to Chichester, West Sussex
« on: February 21, 2005, 06:14:18 AM »
Greetings  All

I have the opportunity to transfer with my firm from sunny Albuquerque, NM to Chichester.

My wife and I are in our late 40's. Kids are now grown. We have had the opportunity to travel throughout Europe on vacation but our visits to the UK have been confined to the City of London.

Is anyone on the forum familiar with Chichester? I would greatly appreciate any info concerning life in and around  Chichester. Comparison with London for cost of living. (I imagine its less but still pretty high.) Mass transit, shopping, the arts.

Thank you for your help!

Hi PolarNav,

Welcome!  I'm from Las Cruces and lived briefly in ABQ.  I am up in Scotland, so have no usefull information on Chichester.  Best of luck with your move.

My mother lives in Horsham in Sussex, which is not far away. Chichester is a lovely town with a marina and lots of old buildings, including a beautiful cathedral. As you say, it will be cheaper than London, but still quite expensive, especially as it has good rail links for commuters.
Frequent train services operate via Gatwick Airport from London Victoria to Chichester, taking approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Coastal services run from Brighton and Portsmouth.  This is a really good website:

I've never lived in Chichester, but have an aunt & uncle near there and have visited them often. It's a really beautiful city. The cathedral is great and it has some good shops. I would agree with others who've guessed that it might be an expensive place to live, but I don't know for sure. My aunt and uncle live in the Witterings -- East & West Wittering are coastal villages only about a 15 minute drive from Chichester. That might be an option for you -- but, given that they're right on the coast, they might be expensive places as well. Their village has lovely thatched roof cottages and a lovely seafront.  Having said that, West Sussex is full of really beautiful and quaint little villages, many of which are easy commuting distance to Chichester. Best of luck to you!

:)My thanks to all who responded to my posting.

My wife and I travel to the UK in 2 weeks and we are very excited. Although we have traveled the world there is still much to see and learn.

Our thanks to all of you for your best wishes, and insights!
