Wanting to know what to ask
« on: March 10, 2005, 04:50:35 PM »
We are considering a move to Edinburgh and are coming to visit at the beginning of April.  For those of you who have made the move, what do you wish that you had asked before you came?  We are a family with 3 children ranging from 16-7, so any information or suggestions that you have would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I guess a lot depends on the how or why of the move, i.e. what visa you're coming under.  Is it student, work permit, is one of you a UK citizen?  Or the enviable "retired person of independent means"?

I echo Peedal's sentiment.  I won't lie:  housing here is VERY, VERY expensive - unless you're coming from a place like NYC or San Fran it will be a shock.  Only London and Bristol are more expensive.

To be honest, I think the less you know about the details of "what it's like" the better.  Everyone here has a different experience which is coloured by a million previous experiences.  Don't listen to anyone else's opinions on this country, and just enjoy all the new things like the adventures they are once you get here.  :)

Make sure your kids are prepared for a different life and that they are on board...particularly your oldest who would be leaving during a very important point in his/her life (it's tougher to transition when you get closer to your senior year in high school)...just be prepared for things to be awkward at times, for you to get frustrated and for the entire family to be open to communicating their feelings - and that no one should be shut out for being unhappy after the move...though most kids tend to adjust over time as do most adults.
