Car insurance for American drivers?
« on: March 10, 2005, 09:36:15 AM »
I am getting a car shortly, and am wondering if anyone is aware of British car insurance that will give credit for my American driving experience.  I have had my British licence for one year, but I have 20 years' driving experience in the USA.  Does anyone know of a company that will give me credit for my American driving experience?

Thanks
Theresa

I also wondered the same thing. I drove here on my American licence probably longer than I should have before getting my full UK licence. We got insurance for "any driver over 25".

I didn't find any insurance company who would do that. If you come up with anything, please let me know! I feel it's so unfair to be treated as a "new driver" when I got my first license 27 years ago!

A friend of mine got insurance with Norwich Direct before she had her full UK licence and had her US insurance company fax over the details of her previous driving record, though I'm not at all certain that it was of any benefit to be honest. I haven't been able to get insurance at all yet as our car is in a very high insurance class.

Direct Line gave me my insurance based on how long I had held any licence, not a UK licence.

Thank you for all the advice/replies on car insurance.  My husband is kindly looking into it for me, so I'll pass on the tips.  I'm looking forward to being able to drive again!
