I have a job interview Tuesday
« on: June 25, 2003, 01:44:39 PM »
Hello Everyone,

I have a job interview Tuesday.  I do not officially have my visa yet.  Our MP is still trying very hard to obtain a variance from the Home Office and we are trying to come up with the cash for the trip to NYC consulate.  I was surprised they rang up for an interview because I had never heard anything from them.

George said I should just not say anything about the Visa issue unless they offer me the job.  I applied for the job because I would be perfect fit for it.  Any advice?  I am not trying to mislead anyone but if they would be willing to get me the work permit I would love that.  Oh the mess I make.   ;D  Any thoughts?

Cheers,

I agree -- don't mention the visa till they offer you the job.  Other than that, no advice.... just wanted to wish you good luck!!

If you're still here "technically" on simply your passport as a Visitor, I'm not sure I'd take the chance and go to the interview.  I mean, it clearly states that you cannot SEEK employment whilst here as a visitor, and I think most employers just assume you are free and able to work when you do the interview, so they might not appreciate it to find out otherwise.

I hate to be a party-pooper on this, but the last thing you need is anything the Home Office can run with to prove that you've broken the terms of you being here on the sort of "permission" you ARE on - that being simply as a visitor.

Really - I would follow each and every rule right now so you can go into any fight with clean hands.  It's frustrating to see the *perfect* job slip by - I know because I looked at them all in the papers for the 6 months before the wedding.  But really, even just volunteering is wrong on your visitor status - no undertaking of employment, paid or not, is allowed.

Again, I hate to be a wet blanket.  But you have to think about the future in this situation, not just right now.  And another job will come along when you're all legal and able to actually take it.  Honestly, the chances of this place you're talking about being willing to go through all the rigamarole of obtaining a Work Permit for you are slim and none, unless it's an incredibly specialised/hard-to-fill job.

Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear, hon.  You know I'm on YOUR side, though   :-/

Hi Peedal,

You are not a party pooper.  You are words of wisdom.  Everyone needs to hear the other side of the coin.  I have come up with a compromise.  I am going to the job interview.  I have not had one in over a year and feel the need for the practice.  But I am going to explain the situation.  If they still want me than we can work out a deal to sponser me.  I am not then technically breaking the law.  What do you think?   Your thoughts and insight are sound.   :)

Cheers,

It's a tough call.  In this sort of situation one takes a chance either way.  Sounds like you've made the decision that is right for you and hopefully it works out well!

Hello Elle,

Thank you for the well wishes.  I hope it will work out.  It sounds odd but a lot of things seem to be falling into place.  I plan to be very honest with the guy doing the interview.  At least I will have practice on how interviews are done over here in England.  I know it is a risk but at this point I am driving myself crazy staying at home all day every day.

Cheers,

I had an interview on Tues and Wed this week and one of the things they asked to see was my passport/visa. They made photocopies and checked off something on their papers.  So they might ask to see your paper work.  These jobs were at the local  hospital so maybe they have to be a bit more strict with paperwork.  When I first arrived here 4 yrs ago I couldn't work which was ok for a few months but then I was starting to get bored.  We were planning on going home to get married and get my visa, so dh told me about a volunteer job somewhere. I called the place that "i thought" he meant, but it turned out to be a different place altogether (oops)! But, to make a long story short, they invited me in for an interview, gave a position (without pay) and then when we came back from NY with visa in hand, they had a party with wedding presents and a cheque for back pay,,,quite a nice surprise!!  I stayed at that office for several months and then went on to another job (big mistake) and finally ended up where I am now at a place they i thoroughly enjoy.

So, be honest and good luck!

Hello Barbara,

I am glad you enjoy the place you work at now.  I have no intentions of deciving the person doing the interview.  From talking to the HR person she said there were quit a few people who applied and being interviewed.  For a country that is suppose to have an IT shortage there seems to be no real IT jobs.  I am not above thinking that they would rather hire an UK citizen instead of me even if I had the work visa.  It economically depressed times that is always the case.  But than again I have 10 years experiance in my field.  I am just going and seeing.

Thank you very much for the advice.

Cheers,

I was wondering the same thing, Moi.  Please give us an update!
Life should NOT be a journey to the
grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well
preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand,
wine in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and
screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"
