How long from close to interview?

Hi everyone,

How long does it typically take for places in England to contact applicants about interviews after the close date?

I applied for a job I'd really like to get, and I believe I am quite well qualified for it.  I haven't heard anything yet, and I'm starting to get discouraged.  How long should I wait until I figure (or contact them to check whether) my application has been unsuccessful?

Gads, that totally depends. In general, I've found the UK much more timely with the interview/hiring process. Universities in particular often post the closing date AND interview date in the ad. That said, I applied for a Uni job in late February and only heard back about 2 weeks ago. Long after I'd thought they would have replied. I'd wait about 3 weeks and then follow up. It can't hurt to ring, especially if you're just contacting an HR or personnel office.

Hmm.  I guess one week and one day is too soon to be feeling discouraged then?

Most of the applications I've filled out have said "If you have not been contacted within 6 weeks of the closing date, you may consider your application unsuccessful."  Still, most places seem to get back to applicants within a month.  Where I currently work usually gets back to people within a week of the closing date, but it's a really small organisation.

I've found they take absolutely *ages*.  One week is definitely not long enough to worry yet.  Give them a month and if you don't hear back, give them a call.
