I went to a Yard Sale right around where we live.  Although I don't think they called it a Yard sale but something else.

It was a bit of stuff in their front garden and a bunch in the back and in a conservatory.  It felt like being back home!

I suppose the nearest equivalent to a car boot sale is a Flea Market, but, as said, you sell out of the back of your car instead of setting up a table.

I took the Gatwick Express last week (sunday AM) on my way home, and I think I saw a car boot sale in a parking lot. I wished there was a way of checking it out but......guess I will have to wait till I come over again.

It depends on where you live as well. My husbans grew up 3 miles from a US Air Force base so there were always loads of Americans having yard sales when they were about to be relocated. Perhaps most of the UK isn't well acquanted with te yard sale, but his small town certainly was. Still... boot sales are really, really popular, and a lot of fun! :D

The only real drag about the car boot sale is you have to drag all your junk to another location and hope and pray it doesnt rain which is unlikey here! At least with a garage/yard sale you can quickly bring everything in.

One gripe about car boot sales...they can hold up traffic for MILES around. :P  DH & I are frequently on the go to get to a park or hiking trail at the weekends & inevitably end up getting stuck in traffic around a car boot sale -- what with all the cars entering & leaving the site.

And it's a brilliant Sunday pastime... loads of people turn up for these things

Lots of bedbugs as well!  Have a care as to what you buy in some of these things.

Gross! You got that right. I wouldnt ever buy anything second hand that couldnt be put in a dishwasher, washing machine or be sterilized. Usually at car boot sales I only buy new stuff or maybe used books or DVDs. NEVER baby stuff!
Even the new stuff I make sure I wash before I use.

I wish I knew about antiques. I love looking at them but have no idea what anything is. I think it would be great to go antiquing!

It is fun, Pebbles! I generally go car-booting with my aunt who knows a lot about antique English china. She's been teaching me! We generally do pretty well. We come home with our goodies and then immediately look them up in her library of antique china guidebooks and see how much everything's worth! I generally pick up some nice stuff for 25p to a couple of £s and find out that it's worth anything up to £10-15 or so. No huge Antique Roadshow type bargains yet, but you never know! And the fun part is finding a piece at a sale that matches something you picked up months ago!

whiteknight, I have some Belleek, too, but it was bought at a very expensive antique shop back in the days before I moved over here and discovered the joys of the carboot sale!

I'm so glad to hear that my very favorite American past time (antiquing and treasure hunting) is alive and well in England!!!  I could spend a whole Saturday pouring over someone elses junk to find a treasure - and I love antique/vintage china!!!  How fun!!!!
