confusion about UK tax credits
« on: April 28, 2005, 05:14:33 PM »
As I understand it, my husband (british) is not allowed to take family tax credits because the kids and I (yankees), are immigrants.  As much as I'm happy to pay tax (well..), I do wonder when this rule expires.

I'd also appreciate any links to uk tax-related websites as I'm about to try to start working and I'm sure I'll be even more confused.

Many thanks

You husband cannot claim UK tax credits on people who aren't: 1) British nationals 2) EU/EEA nationals 3) permanent residents (ILR) of the UK.  Once you and your children get ILR, he can claim them.  Till then, it's not legal.

Once you do get ILR, any claim for tax credits is based on joint income, no matter who applies.

Most people who work in the UK are PAYE - pay as you earn.  There's no need to complete a tax return unless you are self-employed or work a job that is not PAYE.

That makes sense.  I was afraid that there were random deadlines that I wouldn't know to keep up with.

Ah, that would explain the curious lack of the April 15th panic over here, lol.

Thanks for your reply :)

It's yet another of the benefits of living in the UK.  :D
