Bill Bryson

Just had to start a topic about my man Bill.  I love him.....it's like he's a god of expats...lived in the US lived in the UK came back to the US.... :)

Now he has even got a new book about different things in science....just got it from Amazon.  Has anyone else started to read this book?  Does anyone else like Bill Bryson?

Hey vnicepeeps! I *LOVE* Bill Bryson! I have read every book he's written (most of them multiple times hehe).  I work in a bookshop in Central London and actually got to meet him last week!  ;D I got 2 copies of his new book signed, one for me & one for my MIL! He chatted with me for a bit while he was signing the books and was just a very genuinely nice guy. It was *EXCELLENT!*!!

I have heard a lot of good things about Bill Bryson books... not read him yet...but one of my FH's friends gave me one of his books...  it is sitting in England waiting for my arrival.


Has anyone read Mark Wallington series of 500 Mile Walkies, with his dog Boogie?  Great fun reading...as well as good description of places in england.

Bill Bryson is brilliant, haven't read all his book yet but I will... I did read a few before moving to the UK for "preparation". :) I heard he was moving back to the UK again soon.

Marlespo---you are kidding right? Well I guess what he set out to do and showed his kids what's it like to live in the USA.  Maybe after 20 years the UK is like home.  

What's interesting to me is that despite being famous he STILL had trouble with INS.

Regardless I like him because he finds humor in the most common of everyday situations.  I can't wait to see what he does with science!

Have just started re-reading notes from a small Island and I honestly think it should be the first read for anyone who wants to live in Britain.  It gives you in one smallish book everything you are going to need to know about us Brits and in many cases explains why we are like that.  He has a genuine love for Britain and manages to pick apart the British mind but with such genuine warmth and humour you can't help but laugh and nod your head in agreement.

I have read everything he has written and on his travel books have wanted to immediately leave England and go see the places he is describing.  Of course I never do as I am British and much to sensible for that  ;D .

If you onlr read one book before moving to Britain make it "notes from a small Island"

Hmmm... I really liked his books at first, but I found they got a bit tedious.  Notes from a small island was great at the beginning, but then I thought it got a bit to samey and slightly...whiney. He seemed to just be really down on everywhere that he stayed, ate, or visited.  I really want to like him as a) he is from Iowa (like me) and lived near Windsor (like me).  I am willing to give him another try...any other books of his that are unmissable?

I loved his Brief History of Nearly Everything, or whatever the exact title is... it's a total layman's explanation of, well, the history of the world. My husband & I thoroughly enjoyed it, and it's not a travel book at all, way more sciency. Is sciency a word?

My wife and I are terribly pleased that Bryson has accepted the invitation to be the next chancellor at Durham!  She will be the principle liasion between him and the University; hooray, at last another American "on staff"!  ;)

Bill Bryson used to live not far from where i live and yes he is a brilliant author, i love his observations on life and culture v funny v nice guy
