New here!
« on: July 30, 2003, 07:46:07 PM »
Hi,

I'm pretty new here, I've been 'lurking' for about 4 months.  I love the site and it's helped out a lot - just wish I'd found it years ago!  New to posting though.

I'm from Cheshire and came to the States for 6 months.  But....met my husband half way through and that was that!  Been here ever since.  15 years now!  We have four kids aged between almost 3 and almost 13.  We've lived in Utah (9yrs) and Washington state (6yrs).  After months and months of unemployment (he's in construction / hvac) we moved back to Utah (hate it) and now we're wanting to move back to England.  Just can't stop moving around!

We've been applying for jobs with zero success and may end up cold turkeying it back (been there done that!) to England to make it work.

I got my US citizenship done 18 months ago - way easier than I thought, and now all the children have dual passports too, which makes the airports a breeze - provided you don't drop all the flippin passports!

Hubby wants to move to England NOW and I'm dragging my heels trying to find jobs, open current accounts etc- makes for fun debates *!#!

Oh and I'm a chocoholic - what's with the American chocolate?  Give me the UK stuff anyday!

thanks!  I need all the help I can get.....wisdom and all that makes it really scary.  It's so much easier to move the first time or two - I guess the ignorance and 'idea' that it's 'not that hard' really helps......ha ha ha. Packing a bunch of rugrats doesn't really help much either!

You had to go and mention chocolate :o...and with me here in Houston having no chance of getting my hands on a Cadbury's Whole Nut (not a real one anyway). :'( Now I'll be thinking about it and drooling all day. :P I'm a chocoholic as well...if you couldn't tell. ;)

Hello Gromit,

Welcome to UKY...  sounds as though you have a lot of decisions to make with moving...  I think it is great that your husband is willing to try in England...  I wish you all luck with your choices and I hope UKY will become one of those homes for you.

I have a good friend that lives in Layton Utah...  he loves it...but says that the vast mormon tradition there makes it hard to just go out for an evening with drinks and friends...  has to drive to Idaho or into Salt Lake City to find a pub.

Welcome Gromit!  (Great name and one of my favorite characters DH's nick at home is Gromit)  ANYWAY!
We have only been here for 2.5 years and ready to head back already.  How are the kids feeling about the move?

Good to think about things, but up and moving is not the worst either if you have some money or a place to stay.

I am right there with you an the chocolate thing....love love Cadbury's! ;D

O.k, I'm intrigued!  I'm asking but I'm not listening to the 'catch'

The 13 yr old girl is not thrilled, she loves England - to visit.  She wants to hightail it back to Seattle where she's just spent 7 weeks visiting friends!  The 9 yr old is o.k to a point.  The other two are really too young.

Yeah, Utah is kind of hard going, especially if you're not mormon.

Vincepeeps - why you heading back?

Gromit...basically just to try life out there and see how it goes... that and we want more holidays!  I will be getting a PhD there hopefully starting in 2004.  Right now I am just trying to stay afloat in the USA without going nuts at work. ;D

The kids will be okay... :) They are adaptable...

Yeah, you're right, why live without experiencing life?

The holidays would be nice!  My husband doesn't get any paid time off - not even Christmas day.  5 weeks paid a year would be peachy!  ;D
