HELP: Queen Size Bed Frame Won't Fit Up Stairs
« on: May 27, 2005, 07:33:11 PM »
So my shipment from America has arrived and except for a few framed prints, everything came in excellent condition.  Only problem is that my American queen size bed frame won't fit up the stairs.  So its now sitting in my living room which is most annoying.  I was so looking forward to sleeping in my own bed.  So any suggestions on how to possibly manipulate to make it go up?  The delivery guy suggested having a carpenter possibly cutting into the frame but not sure that's a good idea since it might do long term damage.  The other alternative is to get a comparable frame -- which is the UK king that seems to come in 2 pieces.   I don't want to spend the money, but that might be my only option.  HELP!  I'm open to hearing suggestions.

You're not the first American to require a bed to be cut in order to fit it upstairs!  That's the downside of bringing over your bed.  The box spring might not fit either.  Cut it or sleep in the living room...  A good carpenter will put it back together well so it won't be damaged.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

We just moved into an old house with very narrow stairs and bought a kingsize pine kitset bedstead. It had about 300 screws and took 2 days to assemble but it's great now! We bought it brand new on ebay for £45.  What kind of bedstead have you got? Can it not be dismantled? Perhaps you could hoist it through an upstairs window? Argos & Ikea sell a lot of kitset furniture should you end up needing to buy one.

I'm at an Internet cafe and I can't for the life of me remember what brand the bed is.  In any event, the spring box did fit up the stairs.  So it's just the bed frame I have to worry about.  With that, anyone know a carpenter in Wimbledon area they would recommend?  Also, do you know how much a carpenter would charge for this sort of thing.  Thinking it might just be easier and cheaper to get a new UK King frame which comes in two pieces and wouldn't have problems going up the stairs.
