Where to begin?
« on: May 18, 2005, 02:33:55 AM »
Facts:
Fiancee and I want to move to the UK from the US some day in the next decade. Ideological reasons for both of us, and for me (originally born in Ecuador and now a US citizen for 5 years) it's a dislike of the US. She has no family and I have distant relatives in the UK. I'm starting law school in Florida in Aug. and at the same time she's starting a masters program.

What are some good resources for us to look at so that we may educate ourselves to see how feasible (if at all) this move would be.

We have some questions that are difficult to have answered:
-The main questions are how our careers would fare in the UK. She's a speech pathologist and I will either be in law school or starting a law career when we go. Do I need more schooling?
-She has none, but I have some rather large student debts. How will this affect us?
-Do we need a real reason or will just a desire to settle in the UK suffice?

Thanks
Jimmy

The answers to most of your questions will be influenced by what type of visa you will be able to get to stay here.

I am sure a desire to settle here won't be enough, you either need a family based visa or an employment/student based visa and that will determine how you get here, how long you stay and so on.

There are tons of people on here that have a lot of experience with all of this, so I will leave it til one pops in-I just wanted to give an initial response.

Also, your wife's particular skills would probably be in great demand here, there is often a great deal of demand for speech/language professionals in the health services (both public & private).

A law degree is pretty transferable into other areas, so you will always be employed, but I don't know that it will be enough on it's own to secure an employment based visa here, unless you specialise in some way.

Good Luck!

New Dawn is right, since neither of you are UK citizens or can claim UK citizenship, just wanting to come here won't cut it.

And I'll echo the advice about your wife's profession... I'm fairly certain the NHS needs speech pathologists but I'd look into what they need and what the requirements are now rather than waiting for her to have her Masters. I can't see someone with a new law degree based on US law getting a work permit here.

BTW, not sure if they use the term 'speech pathologist' here but I could be wrong.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon
