Rejected for a National Insurance number

After taking a morning off work and spending over an hour in a run down social security office for my NIN interview, I just received a notice that I have been rejected on the basis of them not having "sufficient information".

I have a sponsored work permit, a visa and brought more than enough information with me to the interview.  Has anyone else been rejected and if so did you eventually get it sorted?  The idea of spending another morning with social security is so annoying.

Huh?!  Did they say exactly what info you were lacking?

Nope.  The letter came from Glasgow and it just told me to contact my local SS office in London.  Since their phone is always busy, I haven't been able to get through yet to ask questions.   

Is it possible you've ever been issued a number before?

No, It's my first time working over here.  Or anywhere outside the US

Have you been in and out of the UK a lot in the past or spent any significant amount of time here?

I spent Jan through June 2004 on business in London.   I came back for 3 more days in Oct.   But I was completely employed by the US arm of my company.   Is it really a possibility that the excess travel is causing the problems?  They didn't seem to indicate that was an issue when I went for the interview I was completely up front with them. 

I just wish I could get through to someone on the phone.  I think I may just have to show up at the office and speak to a real person to set up another appt.

No...I was just trying to figure out what other info they wanted.  If they asked about your previous trips and you told them, you should be fine on that front.

That might be a good idea -- it's impossible to get anyone to answer the phone at job centres!

 Seems like they'd ask for all the information they need while you're in front of them so they wouldn't have insufficient evidence.
